Hadeed Habib
Hadeed Habib researches the visual culture of Ancient South Asia, particularly within the region of Gandhara. His primary scholarly interests include maternal imagery, cross-cultural referentiality, and the early incorporation of local religious iconographies into the Buddhist milieu. Throughout his work, Hadeed aims to highlight the agency of Gandharan makers, not as passive recipients of Mediterranean influence, but as individuals purposefully engaging with imported icons. He also aims to connect his work on the ancient world to the post-colonial project of nation formation, wherein ancient cultures have been variously exalted and forgotten.
Hadeed graduated with honors from Johns Hopkins University in 2025 with a BA in Art History. His Honors Thesis paper engaged with the complicated case of Greco-Roman images in Gandhara, arguing for a nuanced reading that found Gandharan makers combining existing South Asian stylistic tendencies with new iconographies, resulting in novel images
