Misaki specializes in the arts of Japan, with a focus on ceramics and other art works used as utensils for chanoyu, or Japanese tea ceremony. His current research examines handmade ceramic tea bowls by Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558-1637), who was a sword polisher and connoisseur by profession but also engaged in various artistic pursuits through collaborations with fellow merchants and artisans. Misaki has earned his B.A. and M.A. in History of Art at the University of Tokyo, where he was also enrolled in the Ph.D. program prior to entering Columbia. His research has been previously supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, and the Mary Griggs Burke Center for Japanese Art.
