Patryk Tomaszewski

Patryk P. Tomaszewski is a Lecturer in Discipline in the Department of Art History and Archaeology. A historian of twentieth-century art and visual culture, he specializes in Central and Eastern Europe, with a focus on the relationship between cultural production and politics in the former Soviet satellite states during the 1940s and 1950s. He is currently at work on a book on how Polish audiences encountered Socialist Realism in state-sponsored exhibitions of the early 1950s.

Tomaszewski’s writing has been published in Curator: The Museum Journal (2026), MoMA's post: Notes on Art in a Global Context, ARTMargins Online, and he contributed to the edited volume The 1982 Cultural Exchange Between Łódź and Los Angeles (Łódź: Muzeum Sztuki, 2024). His research has been supported by the Association for Slavic, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York, and the CUNY Graduate Center, and he was awarded the 2026 Independent Scholar Research Grant from the Society of Historians of East European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture (SHERA).

Before joining Columbia, he taught at Fordham University and the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and has served as a Senior Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
