As Director of the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU, Joan Kee works to create the conditions for new communities and forms of art historical inquiry through connecting scholars, institutions, and publics across disciplines and geographies. Her books pursue these questions through different vectors. Her most recent book and winner of the 2024 Robert Motherwell Book Award, The Geometries of Afro Asia: Art beyond Solidarity (2023) asks how art history might proceed from the assumption of a global majority rather than exceptional cases, using Afro-Asian frameworks to unsettle core disciplinary terms including genre, comparison, autonomy, medium, and format.
