The Department of Art History and Archaeology and the Department of Germanic Languages invite you to a talk with the Berlin-based film director Andres Veiel about his recent documentary Riefenstahl (2024), focusing on Leni Riefenstahl’s photographic campaign in the southern part of Sudan and her 1973 book Die Nuba (published a year later in the USA by Harper & Row as The Last of the Nuba). Whereas her photobooks on the Nuba, beginning with The Last of the Nuba, have garnered a good deal of critical attention from Susan Sontag and others, her film footage has been hitherto unexamined.
The talk with the director Andres Veiel will take place on February 12th, 6:00 pm at Columbia University’s Deutsches Haus, 420 W 116th Street. The talk, moderated by Professor Avinoam Shalem (Arts of Islam) together with Professor Zoë Strother (Arts of Africa) as discussant, will be followed by a reception. Registration is required to attend this event at https://tinyurl.com/riefenstahltalkwithdirector
A screening of the film Riefenstahl will be held the week before the talk, on February 5th, 5:00 pm at 612 Schermerhorn Hall. If you would like to attend this screening, please register at https://tinyurl.com/riefenstahlfilmscreening before February 1st, 11:59 pm.
