Michael Waters has been named as a 2018/2019 I Tatti Fellow. His current project examines the multifaceted relationship between printed images and Renaissance architecture through an object-based approach.
Branden Joseph has been awarded a 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship. His current project, tentatively titled Forms of Life, examines the works of punk poet Kathy Acker, underground filmmaker Jack Smith, conceptual artist Lee Lozano, and visual artist Carolee Schneemann.
Kellie Jones received an honorary doctorate as an influential leader in the field of Art History from her alma mater Amherst College. Jones received the honor during the 197th Commencement on Sunday, May 20, 2018.
As part of the series New Work in the Arts & Humanities: East and West, taking place at the American Academy in Rome on 18 May, Avinoam Shalem sets the methodological and historiographic stage for the symposium. His keynote lecture, Through the Backdoor: The Histories of 'Islamic' Art and Architecture in Italy, will be livestreamed here.
Anne Higonnet will be delivering a three-part series of talks inspired by the collection at the Met, titled The Better Angels of Our Wardrobes: Art, Clothing, and the Catholic Imagination, showing how painters from Hieronymus Bosch to Fra Angelico provided inspiration for some of the most astonishing and thought provoking fashions.

MODA Curates is an annual opportunity offered by the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery and the MA in Modern and Contemporary Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies program (MODA) for outstanding curatorial proposals related to students' theses. The sixth iteration of this series is presented for the first time alongside the First-Year MFA Exhibition, in the spacious new Wallach Art Gallery at the Lenfest Center for the Arts. It features two exhibitions exploring pioneering, experimental artistic practices.

One of the most magnificent medieval textiles in the Mediterranean region is the Chasuble of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was murdered by the knights of King Henry II and canonized three years later by decree of the Roman Catholic Church. According to the Cathedral of Fermo, which holds the chasuble, the embroidered blue silk vestment was donated to Fermo by Bishop Presbitero in the twelfth century. But despite its importance, its outstanding preservation, and the presence of Arabic inscriptions, the chasuble has never been the subject of a comprehensive study.

With a gift from an anonymous donor, Columbia University has established the Howard McP. Davis Professorship of Art History. The professorship honoring Davis, a respected scholar and longtime Columbia teacher of Renaissance art, will support a Columbia art historian of European art and architecture in the period from 1300 to 1700.
Michael Cole, professor and chair of the Department of Art History and Archeology, is the first Davis Professor of Art History.
Avinoam Shalem has been appointed the 24th Director of the American Academy in Rome. The appointment, which is based in Rome, will begin in July 2020.

On January 23, 2020, Art X Social Justice opened their inaugural exhibition Stories in Paper on the eighth and ninth floors of Schermerhorn Hall. The artworks were made by incarcerated artists in a series of six workshops conducted within New York State’s prison system in fall 2019. Laura Betancur, Expressive Arts Therapist and El Museo del Barrio educator, led the workshops with the assistance of graduate students from the Department of Art History and Archaeology. …
The Media Center for Art History is delighted to announce that it is the recipient of a two-year Digital Art History grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for the digitization and online dissemination of the Columbia University Department of Art History and Archaeology’s Photograph Collection. The collection contains over 105,000 photographic prints collected by the department’s Visual Resources Center starting in the early 20th century.
Professor Emeritus Stephen Murray received an honorary doctorate from the University of Picardy, Jules Verne in northern France. The honor celebrated the university's fiftieth anniversary and the eight hundredth birthday of the Gothic cathedral of Amiens. Murray, who has written three books on Amiens Cathedral, is the first American scholar to receive such an honor from the University of Picardy.
